In order to achieve and maintain a beautiful lawn, you should employ basic lawn care practices such as properly mowing, fertilizing and watering. It is also important to ensure that nutrients can reach the soil beneath your grass. Aeration can be an extremely vital element to a healthy lawn because it allows air and water to penetrate built-up grass or lawn thatch. Get rid of thatch and make way for a beautiful lawn with this quick guide to aeration. You’ll learn why, how and when to aerate your lawn for the best results.

What is Aeration?
Aeration involves perforating the soil with small holes to allow air, water and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots. This helps the roots grow deeply and produce a stronger, more vigorous lawn. The main reason for aerating is to alleviate soil compaction. Compacted soils have too many solid particles in a certain volume or space, which prevents proper circulation of air, water and nutrients within the soil. Excess lawn thatch or heavy organic debris buried under the grass surface can also starve the roots from these essential elements.
Should You Be Aerating Your Lawn?
One of the most common questions from homeowners is how to determine if they should be aerating their lawn. Your lawn is probably a good candidate for aeration if it:
- Gets heavy use, such as serving as the neighborhood playground or racetrack. Children and pets running around the yard contribute to soil compaction.
- Was established as part of a newly constructed home. Often, the topsoil of newly constructed lawns is stripped or buried, and the grass established on subsoil has been compacted by construction traffic.
- Dries out easily and has a spongy feel. This might mean your lawn has an excessive thatch problem. Take a shovel and remove a slice of lawn about four inches deep. If the thatch layer is greater than one-half inch, aeration is recommended.
- Was established by sod, and soil layering exists. Soil layering means that soil of finer texture, which comes with imported sod, is layered over the existing coarser soil. This layering disrupts drainage, as water is held in the finer-textured soil. This leads to compacted conditions and poor root development. Aerating breaks up the layering, allowing water to flow through the soil more easily and reach the roots.
When to Aerate Your Lawn
The best time for aeration is during the growing season, when the grass can heal and fill in any open areas after soil plugs are removed. Ideally, aerate the lawn with cool season grass in the early spring or fall and those with warm season grass in the late spring.

Deep Core Aerating
Improve the overall health of your soil with long-lasting effects. Pronetgroup Landscape aeration service helps to reduce thatch, improve nutrient and moisture uptake and ultimately enhance your lawn’s ability to withstand environmental stresses. Enabling your lawn to rejuvenate after a long winter is important and aeration provides many benefits by allowing your lawn to receive the air, water, and nutrients it needs to replenish.
Pronetgroup Lawn Care Offers Deep Core Lawn Aeration
Aeration is the first step to any lawn care program. Aeration creates hundreds of holes in your lawn by using a machine called an aerator. The aerator pulls dirt plugs from the soil level of your grass to allow more water to reach the roots. Lawns that are aerated every year stay greener because more moisture reaches the roots (as much as 50% more water). We all know it’s always greenest at the downspout. Professionally aerated lawns allow for a healthier, greener lawn.

What Is Over Seeding?
Overseeding is the process of broadcasting seed on existing turf. Overseeding immediately after core aeration dramatically increases the germination rate of the seed. So instead of broadcasting seed on an established turf and hoping the seed will germinate, carrying out this process after aeration will cause the seed to fall into holes in the turf where it will have adequate seed-soil contact for germination.

“I can’t keep up with the weeds anymore! We have the worse lawn on the block”
At Pronetgroup Lawn Care, we understand your frustration with weeds on your lawn. You tried picking, spraying, and digging out the weeds, only to have more appear, often by the next mowing. We’re here to help and can usually start service the same week you call!
Commercial grade weed control products are only available from professional lawn care service providers
You’ve done the right thing seeking professional help for your lawn. Commercial strength weed control cannot be purchased at home renovation stores or garden centers.
The weed control that is still available on box store shelves does not work and can be very confusing to apply. You must know what type of weed killer to apply where, when to apply it, and how to mix it properly only to be frustrated with the results. A common mistake we see is applying a non-selective weed control like Roundup to control dandelions, thistles, chickweed, and clover.
Pronetgroup Lawn Care have the training, and knowledge to know what strength, how much, and what type of weed control to safely apply to the weeds on your lawn

We use the best fertilizer for your lawn. We prefer liquid fertilizer over granular for several reasons. It’s a faster greening, so you see results quicker. Liquid fertilizer has minimal burning; it does not need to be watered in immediately after an application like granular. Less watering in drier conditions because liquid grows deeper roots. It is quickly absorbed into the lawn so children and pets can be back outside usually within an hour after treatment. It is gentle on all types of paws and is even better for our feathered friends who mistake granular fertilizer for food. Liquid fertilizer means no messy sidewalks to sweep up after an application.
We understand the local weather and how quickly it changes so we mix our fertilizer weekly to achieve optimal greening despite the unpredictable weather conditions. Our fertilizer is also adjusted for the time of the season. In the spring we focus on early green-up and in the fall, we add more nutrients for the roots. We’ll notify you before all applications the day before and we’ll happily reschedule if you have any back yard plans. We want you to enjoy your beautiful lawn this summer. We’ll send an after-service email with lawn tips, watering, and mowing instructions after each application.
